A Lifelong Commitment to Auto Body Collision Repair
Three decades ago, Jim Cooley purchased Advanced Collision in Attica, NY after working for its original owner as a combination technician for several years. It was a great opportunity for him to learn every aspect of collision repair, something Cooley was interested in starting at age 11. He went from detailing vehicles and sweeping floors to running a body shop at age 18.
“It was a great experience because I had good teachers and I did everything hands-on, which is the best way to do it,” Cooley said. “The first car I ever painted was a 1971 Pontiac GTO that was wrecked when I bought it. My boss said, ‘It’s your car, you paint it,’ and I painted it brown metallic. I wish I still had that car because it would be worth $100,000 today. (He sold it for only $800 many years ago.)
In 1989, opportunity knocked and Cooley answered the call. “The shop was associated with a local car dealership and its original owner who was a friend of my father’s wanted to sell,” Cooley said. “So I started renting the facility at first and soon later bought it, and now I’ve been here for 30 years.”
Today, most collision repair professionals specialize in either body work or paint. However, Cooley learned to do both and can still get in there and fix a vehicle if needed. When he became the owner at Advanced Collision in 1989, Cooley already had a customer base and hit the ground running. Today, the shop employs six people, including three highly-trained technicians, a customer service rep, an estimator, and a detailer out of two buildings equaling 4,400 sq. ft.
As a native of Attica, NY, Cooley is now repairing cars for his original customers’ kids and grandchildren as well. He has established a reputation for being fair and honest and it’s paid off over the years. “Our motto is ‘People, Equipment and Service-Simply Unsurpassed’ and that says it all. Fixing peoples’ cars is a responsibility and something we take seriously. Living in a small town means that I run into my customers all the time, so quality and accountability are a huge thing here at Advanced Collision.”
With an eye on the future of the auto body collision repair industry, Cooley always has an apprentice working at the shop. Something he has been doing since day one. “I’ve had good teachers along the way, so it’s satisfying to be able to teach the new techs what I’ve learned,” he said. “We always have one auto tech student from Genesee Community College working here and it’s been a great experience.”
Known as a green business, Cooley runs a planet-friendly auto body repair company on several levels. “We recycle everything we can-metals, headlights and paper. We have a large metals recycling bin on the premises. These bins are also available to the public.
We recently purchased a variable drive air compressor that uses less energy. We also began using waterborne paint back in 2010, well before the curve, in order to provide a healthier environment for our employees and the surrounding community without sacrificing quality.”
The formula for success at Advanced Collision is not complex. “At Advanced Collision, we utilize the latest equipment and technologies available to provide you with service that’s simply unsurpassed. Our business has always been about our customers and that will never change. We strive to excel in every area of service and quality control and our 5-star reviews tell the story.”
